Whether you’re looking for a picturesque hike along the trails of North Table Mountain or a city park, or a serene camping getaway at Golden Gate Canyon State Park, Golden is the place to enjoy the outdoors as nature intended.
North Table Mountain
The rocky mesa of North Table Mountain rises above Golden, enticing hikers, adventurers, and wildlife enthusiasts year-round.
North Table Mountain contains more than 15 miles of trails to explore on foot or by bike. Here, there’s plenty of space to escape the bustle of city life. The best time to hike North Table Mountain is during the spring and summer when the wildflowers are in peak bloom, but the park is accessible all year long.
The North Table Mountain Trail, 1.5 miles long with moderate to advanced levels in difficulty, can be accessed at the north end of Golden and offers impressive valley views. You may come across a Golden eagle or a mule deer along your journey. Shade is a rarity in this rocky terrain, so cyclists and hikers should be sure to bring their sunscreen.
The park’s “Golden Cliffs” are also an ideal location for rock climbing enthusiasts. Climbers flock to Golden, and North Table Mountain, in particular, to ascend the mesa’s challenging cliffsides.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park
Golden Gate Canyon State Park is a four-season park filled with natural wonders, from aspen forests that turn a fiery yellow every autumn and meadows of springtime flowers to rocky cliffs and hidden lakes (perfect for fishing).
The park’s 35 miles of trails provide scenic adventures for all types of outdoor fun. Get the crew together for a day of invigorating mountain biking or hiking. Other activities include rock climbing, picnicking, horseback riding, and winter sports. Stay the night and sleep on the campsite grounds or rent a cabin, guest house, or yurt.
